The Wellington High School girls basketball team played some of its best ball of the season and went on to beat Circle 50-35 in a home game.

Halfway through the first quarter Wellington trailed by one, but then closed the quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 21-13 lead. The Lady Crusaders started the second on another 11-2 run and led 32015.

Wellington led by as many as 18, using a stifling full court press that caused problems for the Thunderbirds.

Wellington coach Eric Adams said the team played its best half of the season in the first half, but then he said they did not play so well in the second half. Still it was enough to hold on for the win.

Carlie McComb led Wellington with 13 and Lauryn Snipes added 12. Taylor Zimmerman had 10 rebounds and six points.


The Wellington High School boys basketball team cut a seven-point deficit to one with a minute left, but could not get over the hump Tuesday, losing to Circle 52-48.

With about three minutes left Wellington trailed by seven. Austin Dunn converted a three-point play, Colin Reichenberger hit a foul shot and Trevor Nance added two more, and the Crusaders were down 48-49 with a minute left.

Twice after that team got turnovers, but missed on one shot and had a turnover of their own on the second one. With 12 seconds left Circle hit a foul shot and led by two. Wellington still had one last chance, but missed a shot. Circle added two more free throws in the final second to make the final.

Trevor Nance led Wellington with 21 points. Connor Phelps had 10, Reichenberger and Dunn had seven each and Baker added three.
