Electonic cigarettes are becoming a viable alternative to smoking tobacco. Lindsay Hatfield thought so, so much in fact she opened her own business selling them.
She has a shop in a suite inside the post office building on Harvey Street.
The cigarettes are also sold in some convenience stores and area tobacco shops. Hatfield’s shop, Sweet Vapors, is different.
An electronic cigarette uses a small tank of fluid to create a vapor that is inhaled, just as one would a traditional tobacco cigarette. The user gets the same  charge of nicotine, but does not get the smoke or chemicals that cause serious health problems.
What makes Hatfield’s shop a little different is that she blends the juices in the tank to suit individual customers.
Some people mix their own, but that can be a tricky proposition as you have to know how much nicotine to put in there. Hatfield also said when you buy juices over the Internet, or from other countries, you really don’t know what is in there.
She carefully mixes the juices with flavors to suit the needs and tastes of her customers.
It was the desire to have a safe alternative to smoking that got Hatfield started on  this adventure. She found pre-packages cigarettes were not strong enough or didn’t have the right level of flavor. That led her to mixing her own, and that led her to opening her shop.
It was four years ago that she made the switch from tobacco to e-cigarettes.
“It is the same nicotine, but id does not have the harmful chemicals that kill people,” she said.
She enjoyed the research and mixing to the point that she felt comfortable opening her own shop and mixing the juices for others.
“People said I should open my own shop,” she said.
It was four years ago that she made the switch from tobacco, but only about a year since she opened her shop.
She said there are about five different styles of cigarettes to choose from, and hundreds of flavors.
“If you can eat it, drink it or smell it, we can make that flavor,” she said.
While most people want a plain tobacco flavor, she has hundreds of them. You can get bacon flavor, or about any type of food flavor.
She can also make the flavor as strong or as mild as you like.
The same with the level of nicotine. That is done by trial and error, but she said she can make the juices with the amount of nicotine customers feel they need.
Page 2 of 2 - Hatfield said her business is going great, with more and more people trying out the electronic cigarettes.
She hopes to eventually create a lounge for her customers.  She would like to have snakes, soft drinks and perhaps a TV.  It would be a place for people to relax and try all the different flavors.
A basic kit cost around $30 to start out, and then you have to buy the juices.  Depending on how much a person smokes can affect how long one of the tanks last, but about a week is common.
You don’t have to keep buying the cigarettes though, just buy a new tank each week.
This  still works out to be cheaper than what it costs the typical smoker for tobacco.
The medical community is still uncertain about the health effects of puffing on vapor, but most agree it is not as harmful as tobacco.
