Melissa Joy Cox, of Wichita, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at her home in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 55.
Melissa was born the daughter of Walter and Erma (Taylor) Williams on Monday, December 22, 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri. Her parents precede her in death.
On October 21, 2000, Melissa and Roy Cox were united in marriage in Wichita, Kansas. Together they celebrated 13 years of marriage.
Melissa will be remembered as an accomplished speaker, writer, talented musician and entertainer that was especially gifted in singing the Blues. She was a member of the Wichita Blues Society. Always civic minded, Melissa was the Chair of the Sumner County Democratic Party and served as a State Delegate. She willingly gave of herself to others in many ways and was a very active Christian whostayed connected to her church. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to all.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Cox of Wichita, Kansas; son, Zechariah Smith of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Michelle (Salkil) Laham and her husband Derrik of Wellington, Kansas; son, James Kessinger of Wellington, Kansas, grandchildren: Makayla Smith, Jadon Conklin, Aryia Barker and Kellen Laham; brother, Lester Taylor and his wife Jackie of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a sister, Michelle Toledano of Kansas City, Kansas.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 3, 2014 with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Melissa will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in the First United Methodist Church, Wellington, Kansas.
Interment will follow at the Corzine Cemetery near Corbin, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her loving memory to the Melissa J. Cox Memorial Fund. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
