Houston Sober placed first in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) entrepreneurship division, in the state competition last weekend.
Ten students from the Wellington chapter competed and the team qualified to attend the national convention in April.
His business idea- a website promoting human optimization and fundraising for terminally ill patients to cross items off their bucket lists- was presented in front of a panel of two bankers.  He competed against 17 other groups or individuals from Kansas.
“It was really nerve-wracking,” said Sober. “I was one of the only ones by myself. Everyone else was in groups. There was maybe one other person by themselves.”
Several local BPA students attended the competition, held in Wichita
at the Hilton hotel, in fields such as accounting and technology.
About 500 BPA members from all over Kansas attended the 3-day event.  “It was really packed,” Sober recalled. “Every room in the hotel was taken.”
Sober will give his presentation at the national competition in April. For this, he will travel to Indianapolis and join BPA students from across America.
Sober hopes to bring his business plan to life sometime in the future, especially if it places at the national level.  “I think it’s a cool concept,” he said. “I’d definitely be willing to give it a try.”
Although he is unsure of his ability to take home first place in the national level, Sober says confidence is key.  “If you have confidence in life, you can accomplish anything.”
Here are results for Wellington students.
    Competitive Events:
Houston Sober (senior) - Entrepreneurship (1st place)
Dietra Sober (sophomore) - Presentation Management Individual (3rd place); Fundamental Accounting (8th place)
Baylee Greenhalgh (senior) - 4th place Banking & Finance
Ashleigh Huck (senior) - 7th Place Banking & Finance
Jade Dry (junior) - 6th place Payroll Accounting
Alexis Marshall (sophomore) - 6th place Human Resource Management
Open Events (must have placed in top 10)

This means that the local BPA chapter has qualified to attend National Leadership Conference (April 30 - May 2), and represent the state of Kansas in Indianapolis.
