  • A Youth Hunter Education Challenge will be held near Belle Plaine from 8 a.m. until 4 .p.m., Saturday May 3.
The challenge is a program created by the National Rifle Association to promote safety among young hunters.
Youth between the ages of 10 and 18 will compete for prizes, including a .22 rifle.
The cost is $20 and includes everything needed, including guns and bows. Participants are encouraged to bring their own guns.
There will be classes and competition in .22 rifle, muzzleoaders, shotguns and bown and arrow.  There will also be events in wildlife identification, orienteering, and safety trail.
To get a registration form visit their website at www.kansasyhec.org They would like people to be pre-registered, or to at least call ahead and let them know you are coming. They expect about 50 kids at the event.
The challenge is designed to offer competition as well as instruction for hunter safety. It is not a hunters' education class however, which is required for getting a hunting license.
