  • Third grade students in Vanessa Sawyer's class at Eisenhower Elementary were honored during a surprise assembly held Friday morning, with the student body, staff and parents joining them.

    Third grade students in Vanessa Sawyer's class at Eisenhower Elementary were honored during a surprise assembly held Friday morning, with the student body, staff and parents joining them.
    The class submitted a video to the Kansas Dental Association, in promotion of good oral health, and were awarded a plaque and $500 Visa gift card. In previous years, the association has held an annual coloring contest, but decided to challenge students and teachers by The class created video, "It's Going Down, I'm Yelling Brush," received the most votes throughout the state submissions. Sawyer expressed her appreciation to local dentist, Dr. Gwen Stalcup, for allowing the students to film in her office, and Steve Sturgis, who filmed the project for them.
    The second place prize of $250 was awarded to Catherine Calderwood’s third grade class from Woodland Health and Wellness Magnet Elementary in Wichita.“That’s What Keeps Our Teeth So Clean,” was the name of their video.
    Third place of $100 was given to Renee Bowmaker's third grade class at Holy Spirit Catholic School in Goddard for their submission of "Good Tooth Fairy vs. Bad Tooth Fairy."
