Over 200 runners entered the 4th annual Sicily's Run held in downtown Wellington on Sat., May 3.
Sicily's Run began four years ago after Sicily Zeka lost a brave fight with pediatric cancer and passed away Mar. 21, 2010, just before her fifth birthday. The young Wellington girl was diagnosed with a Bi-lateral Wilm's Tumor, which is cancer of the kidneys, in June 2008. Proceeds from the event fund the Sicily Zeka Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to a senior pursuing a medical career every year. In 2023, when Sicily would have graduated, the final scholarship will be given. A silent auction was also held, with proceeds going toward the scholarship fund.
The 5K began at 8:30 a.m. and the 1/2 mile was at 9:30 a.m. Each runner was treated to water and fresh fruit at the finish line. Brad Ewing provided music, and Shelley Hansel-Williams was the emcee.
Overall male winner was Bryan Booth, with a time of 18:48. Overall female winner was Lexie Scheufler, with a time of 24:11, who were awarded medals, as well as a $50 bill
