  • Wellington police have been busy writing tickets to people for now wearing seatbelts this week. It is part of the “Click it or Ticket” campaign that law enforcement agencies across the nation participate in each year.
On Tuesday police wrote 28 tickets, and there were 27 on Wednesday. The campaign runs through the end of the month. As of Friday morning 81 tickets had been written for seatbelt violations in Wellington since the campaign began.
Wellington Chief of Police Tracy Heath said even though that seems like a high number, it is probably down just a little from previous years.
“I don’t understand why” people don’t wear seat belts. “Statistics show they help,” he said.
There are additional police officers patrolling the streets during the campaign, and they are watching cars to see if people have their seatbelt on. There is no checkpoint or specific location, Heath said.
The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is $10 and there are no court costs.
