  • Hundreds of  flags will be flying on Memorial Day when the local VFW presents its Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
The flags are to be put up on Saturday by a group headed by Pat Thomas.
The ceremony itself will honor fallen veterans, and begins with Melanie Dawson singing the National Anthem. The Pleasant Valley Color Guard, an ROTC unit from Wichita, will raise the colors. VFW Commander elect Charles Lawless will lead the pledge.
Col. Robert , Hester, retired, will be the keynote speaker. Hester is a field artillery officer who retired in 195 after 26 years of active servie. He has worked with Wichita schools since then and established an ROTC program.
The placing of the wreaths will then be done, and anyone, or any organization, that wants to be included may do so at this time.
The members of the Post 90 firing squad will then salute the comrades with a round of gunfire.
Taps will be played by Melanie Dawson and Jeremy Burden.
The program is free to the public.
