  • Wellington girls move on to finals at state track meet

  • The Wellington girls track team had a good day at the state track meet at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

    In four events the girls qualified for the finals after placing in the preliminary and has one preliminary left in the morning.

    In four events the girls qualified for the finals after placing in the preliminary and has one preliminary left in the morning.
    Early on Saturday Holly Wright placed second in the high jump.  She and Madi Rollins of Chanute both jumped 5-4, but Rollins won via the tiebreaker.
    The event started at 8 a.m. Wright said it was a little hard to get up and do the high jump that early, but it is her favorite event.
    Later in the morning she placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and qualified for Saturday’s finals with a time of  47.63. In all of the preliminaries they an one or two races. The top two in each race qualify and the remaining four that advance are chosen based on time.
    Wright was busy on Friday. She was also on two Wellington relay teams.
    The 4x100 relay team qualified for Saturday’s final with a sixth best time of 50.68. That was less than a second behind first place KC Piper that turned in a 49.75.
    The Lady Crusaders were not as fortunate in the 4x400 relay team, finishing with the ninth best time.
    Wright competed in four events Friday morning.
    “It does get overwhelming sometimes, but I like it. I like to stay busy,” she said.
    Saturday she will be in the hurdles and in the 4X100 relay event.
    “I don’t think I ran my best (in the hurdles) but I will get ready for tomorrow,” she said.
    In the 200 meters, Jaycee Schettler finished eighth and managed to get into the finals on Saturday with a 26.54.
    Schettler will also compete in the 100 dash. Preliminaries for that event are set for Saturday morning, with finals in the afternoon.
    100 Jaycee Schettler – Prelims 8:30 a.m.,  finals 12:45 p.m.
    200 Jaycee Schettler – 5:50 p.m.
    300 hurdles, Holly Wright – 4:25 p.m.
    4x100 Relay – 3 p.m.
