  • Here are five ways to have fun this weekend.
    1. The big movies opening this week are “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” a PG-13 sci-fi action movie that serves as the second movie of a rebooted franchise (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was the first); “Boyhood,” an R drama by director Richard Linklater; and “A Long Way Down,” an R comedy-drama starring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul.
    2. After a month of world-class soccer, the moment of truth is finally here: the World Cup final. The game is Sunday at 3 p.m. EDT on ABC. There will be plenty of pre-game content to watch, too, so set aside your afternoon for what many around the world call the greatest single game in sports.
    3. Saturday, aka 7/11, is generally Free Slurpee Day at 7-11s around the country. Check your local 7-11 to see if they’re participating, and get a tasty free treat to cool you down from the summer heat.
    4. Sunday is National French Fries Day, a day to celebrate French fries. YUM. You can make your own (they’re relatively easy if you’re careful), head to your favorite restaurant that serves fries or hold a “best fries” contest.
    5. If you’re not into soccer or need some other sporting event to keep you occupied, don’t forget that Major League Baseball is still taking place. And if you want even more soccer, Major League Soccer is back in action after taking a break for most of the World Cup.
