I'm amazed by the number of people who really believe that midwives are undereducated when comparing them to doctors. Society seems to look down on midwives because of this perception. The families who choose to use them are also viewed as being really poor if they need to use a midwife. I can tell you first hand that midwives are not undereducated. As a matter of fact they, in some instances, are better educated on the normal process of pregnancy and birth than doctors.
Pretty bold statement, huh? The truth is that midwives hold some birth truths that have been lost as medical schools have stopped teaching certain things - like vaginal breech birth. Unless a doctor is fortunate enough to learn from other doctors who have supported vaginal breech birth they will only learn that breech babies have to come by cesarean surgery - this is not completely true and has never been completely true. Were it true the earth's population would not be as large as it is.

We know that until the early 1900s all babies were born at home. That's not really that long ago. EVERYONE has home birth in their family history. True some babies and mothers died - but we still have some babies and mothers dying today with a fair portion of those deaths occuring in hospitals. We have multiple studies today that cite the safety of home birth but NONE that cite the safety of hospital birth. I highly recommend reading Technology in Birth: First Do No Harm by Marsden Wagner, M.D. to find out what's really going on and how couples can protect themselves from being prayed upon by a medical community that has good intentions but sometimes lacks the ability to wait....

I am attending Ancient Art Midwifery Institute (AAMI) and can tell you that the midwives being educated through this program are not under-educated. To see a list of books that are required reading for every student who goes through this training, click here. They also offer Truth Tellers Conference Calls to everyone. Students of AAMI receive these calls as part of their education. Anyone interested in registering for these calls to learn birth truth can do so by clicking here.
Before anyone passes judgment on another for birthing at home, please do some research and discover for yourself what you might be missing. I'm not against hospital birth but I am against birthing women being prayed upon by individuals who may have never seen the natural process in all its glory.
