An afternoon drive ended in a fiery crash that sent one man to a Wichita hospital.
A Wellington man was driving northbound on Mayfield Rd., near 80th Street South when he swerved on the gravel road and ran off the west ditch, hitting a concrete embankment with his older model pickup truck, deputies said.
The gas tank of the pickup burst into flames. Fortunately, the man was able to exit the vehicle before the explosion, emergency responders said.
Caldwell and Wellington Fire Departments and EMS were called to the scene to treat the man who suffered from a broken arm and severe laceration to the head. The Wellington man was later transported by Eagle Med for treatment at a Wichita hospital.
It is unknown at this time whether the man was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash or if alcohol was involved.
