Wellington advances in the Chaparral Roadrunner Classic basketball tournament. The fifth seeded Crusaders upset the fourth seed Belle Plaine Dragons 47-31 in the opening round of the tourney.

For their efforts, Wellington will play Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the one seed, Clearwater, who the beat the Crusaders by 18 points at Wellington on Jan. 13.

The winner of the next contest will play for the Roadrunner Classic Championship.

On Wednesday, the game started as a defensive struggle, as both teams were having trouble getting shots to fall. Wellington did have the lead for the entire game, but it was close after the first as Wellington had an 8-5 lead heading into the second quarter.

A 15-point second period extended Wellington's lead at halftime to 23-10.

Scoring in the third quarter was a lot more even, but Wellington did outscore the Dragons 12-11, and then 12-10 in the fourth. Levi Gurley, senior, was the Crusaders' leading scorer with 15 points in the contest.
