Wellington, Kan. -

Three brothers, all Wellington High School graduates, have a vision or you could call it a sign — a big sign!
And they have a plan for everyone to see it.
Some might call it a “sign” of the times. Nevertheless, this enterprising trio is ready to make a change to some signs in Wellington.
“We told one guy our plan and he responded with ‘Wow, you may need a place to pull off the road and park to read it all!’” said John McComb, one of the  brothers spearheading what is being calling their ‘Let’s Change the Signs’ campaign.
The four entrances to Wellington each feature a small red sign with white lettering displaying the words: “Home of 2001 & 2002 4A State Football Champions.”
“The first time I came back to Wellington and saw them after the 2002 championship, I said to coach (Lynn) Hibbs. ‘What about the 1969 and 1982 state football titles?’” said Philip McComb.  “Coach Hibbs said ‘Hey Mac, I had nothing to do with them.’”
How the current signs got there is irrelevant, the brothers say, the plan is to have four new signs built and placed at the entrances one at a time.
And the proposed size of these signs?
“They will be spectacular!” says one of the McComb brothers.
Mitch McComb, the youngest of the  McComb brothers, said the signs they have planned and the items that will be honored on them will hopefully be items that are enough to draw alumni back to Wellington to see them and hopefully learn something.
“In our view — John and Philip and myself — we think it’s an honor to have graduated from a high school with such a proud football tradition but how many people know that Wellington has 21 more state titles in other sports plus the four football state titles and is also home to 79 individual state champions?  There’s more, a lot more to these signs than this!”
The brothers decided to bring this idea to the table and see how much interest there is from others by hosting a golf tournament in Wellington on Aug. 9.  Proceeds will go to the fund to build the signs.
Philip said, “We’ll do one sign at a time and the plan is to make each one more spectacular.”
“We’re as excited about this as we can be” said Mitch.  “We’ve made arrangements to get non-profit status for our organization and hire an accounting firm to handle all the donations and fundraising activities.  It’s not just for these signs either.  Once we finish with them, we plan to continue with our fundraising efforts and begin granting scholarships for WHS graduates to attend colleges and trade schools.”
“Oh yeah, we want this to continue in Wellington even when we’re gone or can’t do it any longer,” John said. “It’s for the kids from Wellington.”
In addition to the golf tournament, they plan other fundraising efforts in town.
“We’re trying to figure out a perfect way to place jars in businesses and ask people to toss in their loose change…thus the name ‘Lets change the signs,’” said one of the brothers.
The golf tournament is a go for Aug. 9 at the Wellington Golf Course.  It’s planned to be a three-person scramble hitting from the short tees.
One of the brothers said “We think if we make the drives short, take out the chip shots and then if all the puts are give-me’s, we actually have a shot at winning our own tournament!”
If you’d like to enter your team the price is $50 per person and includes a cart and green fees.
Call Mitch McComb to reserve your team, they will take the first 36 teams or 108 players; well the brothers are playing so they have room for 105 more players.
