Area children have been making a splash this summer, and not just in the swimming pool.
The Summer Reading Program at the Wellington Public Library has been going strong since June 7. Children's Services Coordinator Lisa Vargas says the program has been a hit this year.
"We're getting ready to wrap it up actually," Vargas said. "We've had over 200 kids sign up."
Two-hundred sign-ups is the norm for the program. This year the program's theme is "Make a Splash," participants have done aquatic themed projects. When kids turn in their reading log, they receive "beach bucks" that they can buy prizes with.
Through the month of June, the Summer Reading Program featured 30 minute story times at the library. In July, they have had "splash" themed parties.
"We did a sea-serpent party, a pirate party and today we did a bayou party with all kinds of swamp things," Vargas said Tuesday. The watery theme has opened the door for a lot of fun for the readers.
"There's so many things we can do with it," she said. "We've done some ocean things, we've done some pond things, there's so many different things that we can do, they've all grabbed books along different lines."
There is one more party scheduled- the Under the Sea Party on July 27, but when the summer program ends that doesn't mean it's time to stop reading.
When September comes it will also be Library Card Sign-up Month, Wellington's library is planning a blitz to make sure each student has a library card.
"We always say that's their most important back to school supply is their library card," Vargas laughed.
The public library and the schools team up at times during the school year to make sure students know the importance of reading.
"During the year we do preschool story times mainly," Vargas said. "And the schools, they come in [to the library] and do visits...so we kind of work together." The Summer Reading Program is a good way for kids to beat the summer heat and learn. Friends of the Wellington Public Library provided the t-shirts for the reading program that participants received. When it is time to turn the page to the school year, readers will be looking forward to what awaits for next summer's reading adventures.
"They come in and we just do stories, and songs, and games, and crafts and just kind of have a good time," Vargas said.
