The wheat is growing taller by the day and starting to wave more and more in the wind. The Wheat Festival is growing closer and closer by the day there are still plenty of opportunities for the community to get involved. The Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce is still looking for sponsors and volunteers for this year’s festival.
“This is our big party; the best way to get involved is to get involved,” said Chamber Director Shelly Hansel-Williams. “Because it’s our community festival, we need the community.” The 110th Wheat Festival still needs a “Premier” sponsor. That sponsorship is still usually accounted for very, very quickly. All sponsorship opportunities for the festival are on a first come, first serve basis. Hansel-Williams said it has been a challenge this year.
The chamber has taken the premier sponsorship cost from $5,000 down to $3,500. Hansel-Williams said she is open to the idea of having 35 businesses pool together $100 each for the premier spot.
“I don’t care how we do it, I just need to raise the money,” the chamber director said. Sponsorships have been available for about a month now, Hansel-Williams said asking chamber members for their hard earned dollars is never easy.
“I won’t say the fundraising is ever easy…” She said. “When you’re going to the members that you’re trying to help financially yourself and asking them for money, that’s never an easy job.” Even though the premier sponsorship remains up for grabs, the chamber is confident this year’s celebration will be one to remember.
“I’m not discouraged,” Hansel-Williams said. “I think this is going to be a great Wheat Festival, we have some really cool, new events.” Wheat Festival 2010 will kick off July 7 and go to Sunday July 11. Each day is packed full of events and activities, some of which still need volunteers to make sure everything stays on course.
“If somebody has an interest, if they like an event and have always wanted to help,” Hansel-Williams said. “…We’d certainly love it if they’d give us a call.” A list of attractions can be seen in the Wheat Festival brochure. There are plenty of ways for anyone and everyone to help out the Wheat Festival.
“The biggest thing everybody can do for the Wheat Festival is buy a button,” the chamber director said. “…Those buttons are our bread and butter.” Prizes this year range from gift certificates, to iPods, and even a vacation package. For more information about the 2010 Wheat Festival, to become a sponsor or a volunteer call the Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce at 326-7466.
“One hundred and ten years is a long time for a festival to be going on,” Hansel-Williams said. “And we hope it goes for another 110.”
