Wellington's annual Fall Festival will have plenty of activities for young and old, but the feature attraction is meant to fill stomachs.
The 20th Annual Chili and Salsa Cook-off will be held starting at 7:30 a.m., Saturday at Heritage Park. Eight teams from around Wellington will start preparing and cooking their delectable dishes early in the morning for judging by the public at noon.
Dena Martens of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce says eight teams have joined the race for the chili cup, including long time competitors First National Bank, GKN Aerospace, Security State Bank and Futures Unlimited.
Several new teams have also thrown their hats into the competition, Martens said, making this year's chili and salsa cook-off a delicious treat.
Six of the eight teams will also be making salsa, while the other two will only be focusing on chili, Martens said.
Other groups from around the area are welcome to compete, though registration is closing in fast.
“I'll take them up until Thursday or Friday,” Martens said. She said 10 teams would be ideal for the cook-off.
Though there will be judges for chili and salsa, the public will have their say as they vote for “People's Choice.” Inside each tasting kit are two beans, one for chili and one for salsa and each team will collect votes at their station.
Tasting kits are $2. Bottled water is an additional $1, Martens said.
For those who want to forgo the cook-off, there will be plenty to do downtown, Martens says.
A morning walk raising money for those with Alzheimer's Disease will be held at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9 a.m. A trail will be marked off with balloons and the walk will honor those who have died from the disease and those still fighting it.
The Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Center will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., showing residents the county's past and perhaps even their own.
“It's cool because you can look back and there are reference materials you can pull up,” Martens said.
A Fall Fest Car Show, the first of its kind for the festival, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., downtown. The public is free to register their own cars that morning.
If cars aren't your thing, Martens says the Big Tough Stuff Display will appeal to the smallest kid and the young at heart.
Martens says the display will feature “all things little boys and little girls think are cool” including a fire truck, Sheriff's Department vehicle, a tow truck and even some Monster trucks.
“It's just something different and a way to showcase different things,” said Martens. “We just want the community to come out and enjoy themselves.”
A food court, moon bounce, kid's pumpkin decorating and games will also keep the little ones occupied, while an arts, crafts and business vendors will appeal to the adults.
A beer garden will also be open from noon until 4 p.m.
