At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, a Wellington High School student was killed when the motorcycle, 2006 Honda Shadow, he was driving west on struck a west bound vehicle in the 200 block of East US-160.
The 2005 Pontiac G6 was stopped behind a pickup attempting to make a left turn onto Edwards Road according to a press release from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office.
No injuries were reported for the driver of the Pontiac.
Elements from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, Wellington Fire and EMS, Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Highway Patrol and Wellington Police Department all responded to the scene.
USD 353 Superintendent, Dr. Mark Whitener, released an official statement for the district Friday, stating the the district Crisis Team was in place to assist both students and staff at the high school.
Due to the student being a minor his name has not been released.
At 9 p.m., Wellington Police Department was diverting traffic traveling on US-160 either north on Crestview Road, “Oil Field Road”, or back into town to use the US-81 detour.
The highway was closed until 2 a.m., Friday, due to the scene being mapped out.
