Wauneta L. Townsend, 82, longtime Wellington resident, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 19th, at Wellington Health and Rehab.
Wauneta was born the daughter of Roy and Myrtle (Logsdon) Ashcraft on Thursday, May 9, 1935 in Cambridge. The family later moved to Wellington where she was a Wellington High School graduate. On September 25, 1954, Wauneta and Harold Townsend were united in marriage. Together they celebrated over 41 years of marriage before his passing on June 4, 1996. Wauneta was a longtime legal secretary and spent many years at the Law Office of Bert Church and later at the Sumner County District Court. Outside of work, she enjoyed the outdoors and nature. She loved gardening, fishing and caring for animals. Wauneta was most proud of her family and was blessed to have 5 generations.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Driver and her husband Dean Prindle of Wellington; daughter, Karen Crowe and her husband Richard of Wellington; son, Hal Townsend and his wife Bena of Wellington; daughter, Janet Allen and her husband Doug of Milan, Kansas; son, Richard Townsend and his wife Cassie of Wellington; son, Steve Townsend of Wellington; brother, James "Jim" Ashcraft and his wife Mary Lou of Augusta; sister, Vedia Roads of Wellington; sister-in-law, Sally Wall of Wichita, and Joan Coffey of Wellington; daughter-in-law, Linda Townsend of Wellington, 29 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; infant daughter, Carol Townsend; son, Dennis Townsend; brother, Paul Ashcraft; sister, Virginia Snodgrass and brother-in-law, Leroy Roads.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Wauneta will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, in the First Christian Church, Wellington.
Interment will follow at the Osborne Cemetery in Mayfield.
A memorial fund has been established in her loving memory to the Wellington Humane Society. Contributions may be mailed or left with the funeral home.
