THE KANSAS STAR CASINO’S APPEAL OF ITS 2012 PROPERTY TAX HAS CONCLUDED ITS JOURNEY THROUGH THE COURTS AND A REFUND HAS BEEN ISSUED BY SUMNER COUNTY. THE KANSAS STAR PAID ITS TAXES IN A TIMELY MANNER AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF THOSE FUNDS OCCURRED ACCORDING TO STATUTE IN 2013. THE APPEAL PROCESS RESULTED IN A REDUCTION OF THE COUNTY VALUATION OF THE CASINO FROM APPROXIMATELY $91,000,000 TO $80,510,000 FOR THE TAX YEAR 2012. THE COURTS RULED THAT THE CASINO WAS ENTITLED TO A REFUND BASED ON THE LOWER VALUATION. THE REFUND FROM THAT VALUATION APPROXIMATELY $380,000 OF WHICH THE COUNTY’S SHARE IS APPROXIMATELY $112,000. THE CASINO WAS SEEKING A VALUATION OF $64,300,000 AND A PROBABLE REFUND OF APPROXIMATELY $968,000. THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ESTABLISHED A CONTINGENCY FUND TO CONTEND WITH ANY REFUND OWED FOR THE 2012 TAX YEAR. THE COUNTY TREASURER UTILIZED THAT FUND WHEN PROCESSING THE KANSAS STAR CASINO’S REFUND.
