It won’t be long before the Heat returns. It is a summer tradition for Wellington and that time is coming up soon.
Practice starts for the Wellington Heat players on May 20th, with its season opener on May 26th, at Hibbs-Hooten Stadium, against the Cheney Diamond Dawgs at 7:00 p.m.  It will be a double feature for the Heat and the Diamond Dawgs as they return the next night on the 27th at 7:00 p.m. to play again at Hibbs-Hooten Stadium.
For Rick Twyman, it is “something I look forward to every year.  I love the people, they are great.  We have a beautiful stadium.  I love the competition.  We love it out there.”
Rick had been the coach at Friends University for eight or nine years before he resigned in June of last year once his contract ran out.  Southwestern College had recently started a baseball program and and his friend Kevin Frady got the task of leading it up.  When Kevin asked Rick if he wanted to help out, it was an offer he could not refuse.  He says his daughter “goes to school in the Winfield area” so it all works out rather well.
Rick, a graduate of San Diego State,  still lives in Arizona, where he works “on recruiting and bringing in west coast guys.  I go back and forth.”
The Heat have accumulated 882 wins and 207 losses. The Heat have won 3 World Titles: 1996 and 1998 US Open National Champions, and 2007 National Baseball Congress World Champions. The Heat are also 8 Time Pacific Southwest League Champions, as well as, 7 Time Pacific Southwest NBC Regional Champions. The Heat are also proud to announce that they are  Time National Baseball Congress Midwest Regional Champions. With more recent years, the Heat have become 1 Time Kansas Collegiate League Champions and 1 Time Kansas Collegiate Tournament Champions.
The Heat will go on to play the Denver Cougars on May 29th and 30th at 7:00 p.m. at Hibbs-Hooten.
The Heat will then journey out to Cheney for a repeat performance against the Diamond Dawgs on May 31st at 7:00 p.m.
The Colorado Cyclones come to Wellington on June 1st and 2nd to play against the Heat at 7:00 p.m.
