Business in Wellington is about to get jump started. A Jump Start Convenience Store will be opening soon in the old Loves gas station building on North A Street. Loves closed it's doors in late 2008 but Barbara West, Office Manager for Jump Start is ready to open up.
"We think it's going to fly really good," West said. Mavid Haeri owns the up and coming Jump Start in Wellington. Haeri also owns two Jump Starts in El Dorado along with seven more in Bartlesville, OK. West said the process of getting the business running is going good.
"Pretty much a lot of planning, they're over working on it right now," West stated. "We've got all kinds of types of things we're trying to squeeze in and set up in there." West said there will be a variety of foods in the convenience store, along with lottery tickets, bill pay, and gas pumps.
"Just pretty much convenience all the way around," West explained. "There's going to be a lot of stuff available." There is a lot of excitement growing around town about the new business.
"I'm pumped about an ice cream cone vender in January right now," said Gus Collins, City Manager. "You've got to take in all perspectives, we'll take anything right now." Janice Hellard, Director of Sumner County Economic Development is also glad to see Jump Start coming to town.
"Any time a new business comes in is of course good news," she said. "When it takes a spot of a business that has had to close, that's always wonderful too because we like to fill the empty buildings. Chamber of Commerce is ecstatic for a business to be opening it's doors.
"We have to once again remind ourselves that we have to support these businesses when they do come to town," said Chamber Director Shelley Hansel. "And do what we can to ensure their success and so that we don't have another vacancy." Hellard said this is an encouraging sign for the general public in the midst of recent news of a couple of local businesses closing.
"I think people are going to see there's going to be more activity this year," Hellard mentioned. "Because although you may have some close you're going to have more opening again." Hansel also believes there is growth in Wellington's future, but realizes times are tough right now.
"But I really think we're going to come out bigger and better for it," She said. Hansel feels that more growth will be seen in the direction of the turn-pike. The Chamber Director also acknowledged the job of the City Manger.
"Gus [Collins], not only manages our city and does a good job at that," Hansel continued. "He is also growing our city and we are very fortunate to have him." As far as other vacant buildings, Hellard said there has been some inquiries on the Apple Market building.
"People are feeling more comfortable with the economy," Hellard explained. "So I think that's going to help us with filling some locations that we have been trying to fill in the past." Hellard said she is glad to see someone take advantage of the location Jump Start is moving into.
"It was available and we like that area right there," West said. "I'd say probably two to three weeks and we should be opened."
