The USD 353 Board of Education opened the only bid submitted for repair of the Wellington High School parking lot, Thursday evening at its regular meeting.
Surface Protection Services out of El Dorado put in a two-part bid totaling about $40,000. The first part, to mill and remove asphalt from the cracks, came in at $15,000. The second, to seal all cracks and apply a sealant cover over the entire surface, was around $24,000.
"We've got to take care of it," Board Member Dixie Blankenship said.
Another board member, Robert White, said the freeze and thaw cycle have not been kind to the high school parking lot. The board was in agreement that something had to take place quickly.
"We can't let it go and let it get like the middle school," BOE Member Jackie Berryman said.
The board voted 6-0 to accept the bid. The money will come out of the district's capital outlay fund, which is for fix-ups and maintenance issues such as this one.
The El Dorado-based company has done work for Butler Community College, and other districts like Udall, Augusta, Mulvane and Rose Hill. It has never done any work for USD 353.
The district could have called other companies, but the board would have needed to reject the bid and start the process all over again. Doing so would have delayed the repairs even more and they wouldn't be competed before school starts. Surface Protection Services should start the project very soon.
"I heard mention they might be able to start by the end of the month," district Superintendent Rick Weiss said at the board meeting.
