MANHATTAN, Kan. – A member of the Wellington FFA Chapter was recognized Thursday for having one of the best career development programs in the state at the 82nd Kansas FFA Convention.
John McComb received a State FFA Proficiency award during the convention for outstanding accomplishments he has made in developing programs that will prepare him for a career in agriculture.
The proficiency award program recognizes students for exceptional accomplishments and excellence in a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program. This program allows students to set goals and gain real-world experience in a chosen area of the agriculture industry.
McComb won his award in the area of Agricultural Mechanics Energy Systems, sponsored by Zenger Management. He started his SAE by working with his father to earn extra money. The position expanded when his dad’s company offered him a position. McComb is the staking tech contractor for Shearial Electric Contractors. He has many responsibilities that include operating technical equipment, taking inventory of the power lines, and learning industry terminology. McComb has been in this position for two years and continues to gain additional responsibilities. He has developed skills in communication using signals and radios, setting up and using an elevated transit, and accurately measuring spans between power poles.
In the future, McComb plans to attend college and major in agriculture. He is the son of Mitch and Kelli McComb. His advisor is John Wells.
