The Kansas Association of School Boards and The Service Center at Clearwater will host a community education event Wednesday, June 30, at 3:00 p.m. at The Service Center, 13939 Diagonal Road, Clearwater. Student Achievement in Tough Economic Times: How Will the State’s Tight Budget Affect Your Schools and Your Community? will cover a variety of important education issues that will help residents of south central Kansas be better prepared to make important decisions during the 2010 election season.

The 60-minute program will review the Kansas constitutional charge for public education; how public education’s mission has changed; how those changes have affected costs and funding; the connection between funding and student achievement; and how today’s educational investment affects the state’s future economic prosperity and values.  There will be a question-and-answer period following the presentation.

All people interested in maintaining the high quality of Kansas public schools are invited to this free event, but given the contentious nature of the recently concluded legislative session, school leaders are particularly hopeful business leaders will make plans to attend.  Only through a one-cent sales tax hike were over $300 million of budget cuts, the majority targeted at schools, avoided. The business community was divided on the advisability of a tax increase.  This program will provide an opportunity for important issues that connect education and business to be shared and discussed.

Also, all candidates for state and federal offices are invited.

The Kansas Association of School Boards is a not-for-profit organization which serves as the common voice for Kansas boards of education. KASB members are governing boards for unified school districts, community colleges, area vocational-technical schools and cooperatives, interlocals and regional service centers.  KASB is governed by a Board of Directors composed of school board members from throughout Kansas and is guided by a comprehensive set of policies and resolutions that are approved by a majority of KASB members.

South Central Kansas Education Service Center is a not-for-profit organization which assists area school districts with training, bi-lingual services, and other needs.  SCKESC is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of a representative from each of the Boards of Education of the seven sponsoring school districts.
