As Friday approaches and most students are prepare for fun in the sun, ski trips or just time off from school in general during spring break 2010, one group of students is determined to leave their hearts in Paris a year from now.
Wellington High School students in Jennie O'Dell's French class are planning a trip that will take them through Paris and Rome March 21-28, 2011. The eight to 10-day trip is open to students and adults in the community. O'Dell is no stranger to traveling to Europe.
"This will be my seventh time," said O'Dell. "This will be my fifth time to take students from Wellington and twice I went as a student." The teacher said she got the travel bug when she was 18 years old, and that she hasn't been to Europe in 10 years. She said the experience will be something the students whom she's taught since they were in sixth grade, will remember for their entire lives.
"This is something new and exciting," O'Dell said. "And you get a lot for the money." The trip costs $2,075 per student, each one is responsible for raising the money. Junior Emilee McComb who plans to go on the trip has never traveled outside of the U.S. before.
"I am ready for this," McComb exclaimed. The price of the trip includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, daily breakfasts and dinners, guided sightseeing tours and a lot more the travelers have to look forward to.
"Just the sightseeing," McComb said. "And trying new food like escargot." The tour really gets going on day two of the trip. Students will get to visit Notre Dame Cathedral and have dinner in the Latin Quarter. A guided sightseeing is what day three is all about- the Crusaders will get to see the Eiffel Tower along with many other landmarks.
On day four- The Art of Paris, the destination is the Louvre along with a Seine cruise. A train will take the visitors from Paris to Rome on day five, where on day six they will go on a sightseeing tour through Rome Ancient City. A guided sightseeing tour of Vatican City is on the itinerary for day seven.
"They keep us busy," O'Dell mentioned. "We've got a full schedule of things to do." Austin Samona, a sophomore at WHS is looking forward to the trip and the people he is going to meet. Samona says he has already saved around $200 for the adventure, he said he has learned a lot about France in O'Dell's class.
"It's really just opened my mind to the possibilities of the country and what's out there," the sophomore said. He also said people should be encouraged to travel.
"I know a lot of people think they're stuck in a Kansas or they're stuck in a certain place and they can't go out and experience the new stuff that's out there," Samona explained. "It's good experience, it can open a lot of doors..." Junior Sydney Lipton is looking forward to seeing the Eiffel Tower and picking up some souvenirs. She echoed Samona's words.
"You shouldn't just stick in one place, you should get out and see the world..." Lipton stated. "Because you don't have that long- one lifetime, you've got to do as much as you can when you can."
As far as raising money for the trip, there haven't been any fundraisers planned at the moment but they are sure to come.

"I feel like it's safe because we are in a group, because they do have a tour guide director that plans everything and knows where we're going," the teacher said. "It's a lot different than trying to travel on your own." As for her French class students, they are confident they will be able to hold a conversation with the people there when the time comes.
"I can say 'hi'," McComb boasted. "Bonjour."
