Show choir and the Show Me State definitely have something in common. The Belle Plaine High School Singers are taking their show choir performance to Branson, Mo., to kick off Spring Break 2010. The singers, under the direction of James Stambaugh left for Branson this morning.
"I just think it will be a fun three days," Stambaugh said. "We have something going on every minute of every day so they'll be busy and they'll have fun." The BPHS Singers have 46 students making the trip, a trip that is familiar to upperclassmen at Belle Plaine. This class of seniors has been to Disney World twice; 2007 and 2009. In between the trips to Florida, the singers went to Branson in 2008.
"We're going to have a lot of stuff to do actually this time," said senior Bubba Wilson. "...We have a lot of fun stuff to do this trip too." Tomorrow night the BPHS Singers will be opening for the Haygoods.
"They're really good," Stambaugh said. "They're probably the best act down there right now." After practicing for the Haygoods show, the group will be critiqued by a memeber of the Haygoods. Rehearsing for the Branson trip started before the school year started.
"Parts of it we started this summer when we had summer camp," Stambaugh recalled. "Then we added some new songs before Christmas..." Wilson said all the practice has been worth it.
"It's been pretty strenuous, I'm not going to lie," Wilson admitted. "We're trying to perfect everything...weather it's dancing, how we sound...we've been working our butts off to do this." The director is not worried about the performance that lies ahead, Stambaugh said he has a good bunch of kids.
"This group is one group that does 10 times better in performance than in practice," Stambaugh laughed. "We've grown through the years, you know, you've had these kids forever and they know exactly what to do, they're doing a good job, it's really good." The Dragons will return home Saturday night, for Stambaugh it will be the last trip he takes with the school as he plans to retire after this school year.
This the music teacher's 10th year at BPHS. He started teaching in 1972, he taught for 13 years before opening his own business, after that he started at Belle Plaine. Stambauh said he can't thank the supporters, the faculty, staff and administration enough.
"This is my last trip...," he said. "The trip is just going to be nice and relaxed, it's not any pressure or anything, it's a nice thing. "
