The race for Sumner County Commissioner positions has started with a Caldwell man deciding to run for the Third District.
Stan Burdett of Caldwell has entered the race for Sumner County Commissioner — a position currently held by Commissioner Eldon Gracy.
This will be Burdett’s first attempt at running for a government position and he says it was his students who pushed him to run for the seat.
“I spent 34 years in education and I’m ready to be involved in government,” said Burdett, the former Social Science, Civics and American History teacher. “I always told my students they should be involved in government, especially local government and I decided it was time for me to take my own advice.”
Having an extensive knowledge of government helps, he says, especially when working on improving Sumner County. The Caldwell man says more forward thinking will propel Sumner County into the future.
“Any level of government always has room for improvement and this includes being more efficient with what you have to work with. There are a variety of issues I would like to tackle as a Sumner County Commissioner, such as helping to find more innovative and efficient ways to bring in revenue to our county. With the current economic pressures, it is obvious that the county must continue to bring in more revenue and there are other alternatives to doing that than solely taxing the residents of Sumner County,” Burdett said in a written statement.
“I do like to do a lot of research and I’m working on a few programs right now that might bring in some more revenue,” Burdett said.
Burdett has lived in Sumner County for almost 36 years, he is married to wife Vicki and has two daughters and five grandchildren. The Caldwell man has spent his years in education teaching, coaching, and as the Technology/Vocational Coordinator for the Caldwell School District.
Burdett is the first candidate to file for one of the two County Commissioner seats that will be up this general election. Incumbents Garey Martin in the first district and Gracy in the third, are up for re-election.
Those interested in running for either seat must file with the Sumner County Clerk by noon, Thursday, June 10 either by petition or with a filing fee. Filing fees are one percent of the candidate’s annual salary as well as a $35 registration fee to be paid to the state. A filing by petition must consist of three percent of the registered voters by party in the Commissioner district.
