The city of Wellington has a new clerk, but the County will soon be looking for a new one.
Sumner County Clerk Shane Shields has accepted the position of Wellington City Clerk and will begin on March 8, city officials said in a statement Monday.
The position has been vacant since former city clerk Rose Miller retired in December.
The city received more than 70 applications from around the state and Midwest region. Those applicants were narrowed to 15 and then finally to six, officials said.
Shields was chosen by a three-member panel of interviewers consisting of local citizens and City Manager Gus Collins.
After an almost three-month process, Shields accepted the position.
The new City Clerk and Finance Director has been the current Sumner County Clerk for 13 years. Shields has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Southwestern College in Winfield.
Collins says Shields stood out because of his background with the County including his supervisory roles, though there were great candidates for the job both internally and externally.
“With his experience in the public sector at the County level, I think it will allow him to translate well into city government and this position...I am confident he can move right in and provide the administration with the delivery of government services,” Collins said.
Shields says though he has enjoyed his time with the County, it was time to try something new.
“It was an opportunity to do a little bit different work. Certainly most of my time here (the county) has increasingly been taken up and given to election preparation and so forth, which has taken away some of the time to dedicate to some of the other finance areas and [human resource] areas so it will give me the opportunity to concentrate on some different areas of duties,” Shields said. “I’m excited about the position, I’m looking forward to it.”
“I’ve certainly enjoyed my 13 years here and the help from staff and County staff and the public,” he said.
Now that the city has found a new clerk, the County will now be in search of Shields’ replacement. The current county clerk said once he makes notice of his resignation, state statutes will dictate how a new clerk is hired. According to the statute the Republican Party will hold a convention to vote to appoint someone to the position for the remaining two years of his term. After the remaining term has ended, a regular election will be held and the position will be up for grabs from anyone wanting to file, Shield said.
