A short car chase ended in a wreck, Thursday night, after a Belle Plaine Police officer attempted to make a traffic stop.

The officer was at 951 S. Broadway conducting a car stop when the blue Chevy pickup that was stopped headed south on US 81, Capt. Mike Yoder of the Sumner County Sheriff's Department said.

Chasing the suspect, the officer continued to head south towards the Belle Plaine Y when the pickup veered to the right and drove into a nearby yard, hitting a fence and knocking over a utility pole which ended up hitting the suspect's vehicle, Yoder said.

The pickup finally came to a stop after hitting a smaller red car parked in the driveway at 935 S. Broadway.

The suspect is currently being treated for injuries at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita and the Sumner County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident. It is unknown whether the suspect was consuming alcohol or what charges may be brought against the driver.

Crews are currently on-scene trying to restore power to the area.
