The Wellington Police Department has a suspect in custody for the string of robberies that took place last month in a Wellington neighborhood.
In the area east of Washington Ave. and north of 15th St. there were several thefts reported throughout the month of July. The WPD held a public meeting last night to address the citizens of that neighborhood. The meeting proved to be a factor in finding the stolen property.
"We received some information from a person who was in attendance," said Wellington Police Chief, Tracy Heath.  "By coincidence about an hour or so after our meeting we got a call to a residence in the neighborhood where these burglaries have been occurring."
He said one of the officers recognized some of the property that was at the home in question.
"We spent several hours at this house recovering quite a bit of property," Heath said. "We've been able to link it up to some of our cases."
Police arrested a 22-year-old white male who is now in the Sumner County Jail tentatively booked on several counts of burglary and theft. The police department wouldn't release the individual's name because he has not been formally charged at this time.
Vehicles and garages were the places being targeted by the robbers. Items that were stolen ranged from beer to hand tools and electronic equipment.
"I certainly don't know if we've recovered everything," the chief said via phone Wednesday morning. "I know that we had a pick-up truck bed full of stuff."
Heath said people who were a victim of a crime from the recent spree could get a hold of the Wellington Police Department  so property can be identified. As for last night's public meeting that lead to the arrest, Heath described the attendance as "extremely high."
"It exceeded my expectations," Heath continued. "We actually had so many people here that people actually left because we ran out of room." He said if he had to put a number on it was probably more than 100 people that showed up.
"I appreciate everyone that came out to the public meeting," the police chief added. "I thought we had a really good meeting and it's obvious we received a little bit of information and things just kind of fell into place."
