Emergency responders are on the scene of an accident near K-42 and Milan Road in Sumner County after a near head-on accident has claimed a life.

Capt. Mike Yoder of the Sumner County Sheriff's Department says the two-vehicle accident occurred around 3 p.m.,  near K-42 and Milan Road in Sumner County.

An eastbound driver in a red Ford pickup was struck nearly head-on by a westbound driver in a tan-colored Saturn car after witnesses say the driver of the Saturn failed to maintain a single lane of traffic, Yoder said.

The two vehicles collided, stopping the pickup in its tracks and sending the Saturn into the south ditch where it was flipped upside down. A front end loader was used by a local farmer to help turn the vehicle right side up. The driver of the Saturn was announced "Code Black" or dead on arrival at the scene of the accident. The pickup's driver was a "Code Green" or non life-threatening injuries.

Conway Springs EMS, Harper, King man and Sumner County Sheriff's Departments and Belle Plaine Police Department are at the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol is working the case, Yoder said.
