A local man has been charged with sex crimes against a child.
Richard Allen Niles, 63, of Wellington was arrested on Wednesday on one count of rape and five counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. In court documents, the child is listed as 9 years-old.
According to Det. John Defore of the Wellington Police Department,  said the investigation into the charges started in January 2010.
Social Rehabilitative Services was called to “make sure the welfare needs of the child are being met,” said Defore.
Niles was told not to have contact with the victim and SRS ensured the victim was protected from her alleged attacker in December, Defore said.
Wellington Police finished their investigation in March 2010, referring it to the Sumner County District Attorney’s office, which later issued a warrant for Niles arrest.
Defore says crimes are not always simply open and shut. Building a case against a suspect could take weeks and months.
“There is just an immense amount of follow-up in these investigations because basically you get one piece of information and you have to follow-up on that and in these type of cases, there’s so many different things to follow-up on because we have to corroborate everything,” said Defore.
“These’s not always a ‘smoking gun’ so to speak in these type of cases and in this incident a lot of things came together real well and we were able to...put together a heck of a strong case solely through the cooperation of the victim as well as interviews with the suspect and following up on things they both said,” said Defore.
Niles is currently being held in the Sumner County Jail on $100,000 bond. The Wellington man is to have no direct or indirect contact with the victim or any child under the age of 16 years-old, according to court documents.
