Sumner County Sheriff’s deputies were busy Saturday after a weekend crash and a short car chase.
At around 9:55 a.m., deputies were called out to 1200 W. 160h Street in Caldwell after a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Trenton M. Stevenson flipped his car end over end three times, Capt. Mike Yoder of the Sumner County Sheriff’s Department said.
Stevenson was eastbound on 160th street when he crossed the intersection of 160th and Bluff and his tire went off the south side of the roadway. Stevenson overcorrected causing him to slide in to the north ditch and to roll his vehicle three times.
When deputies arrived on scene Stevenson was already taken to Caldwell hospital, Yoder said.
The investigation into the incident continues and any charges are pending at this time.
A short car chase also kept local law enforcement on their toes.
Late Saturday, deputies received a call of a possible drunk driver from a person driving on US 160. The caller reported a man trying to pass him on the right side and the caller said he was worried about his family being put in danger when the other driver passed him, Yoder said.
A deputy was dispatched to the area and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the suspect, a man from Wellington, didn’t stop and drove around the Mayfield area for about 15 minutes. Other law enforcement agencies, including the Conway Springs, Argonia, Caldwell and Wellington Police Departments also assisted in the chase.
Wellington Police officers even attempted to use stop sticks to stop the vehicle, but the suspect swerved around them, Yoder said.
The vehicle finally came to a stop at 102 Washington when the suspect started to run on foot. A deputy attempted to use a taser on the suspect, but it failed to make full contact, Yoder said.
The pair ended up wrestling on the ground where the suspect was once again tased and taken into custody, Yoder.
Officers aren’t sure why the Wellington man didn’t stop, but he has attempted to elude police before in January 2009, Yoder said.
The suspect, Cody Nuss of Wellington, may now be charged with flee and elude with five or more moving violations, avoiding tire deflation devices, driving while habitual violator, driving while revoked, reckless driving, speeding, failure to yield, driving left of center, driving without headlights and obstructing legal process, Yoder said. No formal charges have yet been filed.
