A 7-1 run to end the third quarter had the Girard girls feeling like true “giant killers” Friday night, but top-seeded Concordia outscored the Trojans 21-7 in the fourth quarter and extended its winning streak to 51 games with a 51-40 win.
Girard trailed 29-26 after Concordia senior Karly Buer converted a three-point play with two minutes left in the third, but the Trojans responded with a drive and basket by Tessa Westhoff.
After a free throw by Buer, Girard got a pull-up basket by senior Morgan Boore, then a three-pointer by Kenzie Dunlap to take a 33-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
But Concordia battled back to tie the game at 40 on a pair of free throws by Buer with 4:02 on the clock.
Her free throws started an 11-0 Lady Panther run to end the game as Girard couldn’t find any offense in the final four minutes.
Girard coach Brad Herlocker was still pleased with his team’s effort against the taller Lady Panther squad.
“I told them I’d never been more proud of them when we won the other night, and I told them tonight that I was even more proud of them,” he said. “The ball didn’t bounce our way, and shots that usually go in rattled back out.
“I’ll tip my hat to Concordia. They’re a great basketball team, but tonight I thought that we were just as good.”
Carly Twarog and Hadyn Herlocker led Girard with nine points each. Morgan Boore added seven points and three assists.
Buer had a game-high 23 points for Concordia.
Girard will face Holton in Saturday’s third-place game, set to tip off at noon in the Bicentennial Center.
