More information about the latest round of casino proposals will be given away as the Sumner County Commissioners will hear from developers Tuesday.
A public meeting will be held at 9 a.m., Tuesday at the Raymond Frye Complex in Wellington. Each developer will have 40 minutes to present their plan to the commissioners before they make their endorsements.
All but one site proposal will be heard by the commissioners, Tuesday. A Prairie Sky casino location located near Mulvane’s Industrial Park will be up for endorsement by the City of Mulvane, county officials say.
Proposals submitted to the County have revealed details of how much money is being invested in each casino, what it may look like, and even what may be down the road in future phases.
Those developers with multiple sites — namely Lakes Kansas Development LL.C. and Prairie Sky — have submitted virtually the same proposal, just to different locations. The Wellington and Mulvane proposals from Lakes Entertainment are nearly identical, with the few exceptions such as locations, zoning and future phases.
The meeting by the commissioners is just the first stop in a round of meetings that will be held to decide who will ultimately get the casino contract.
The Lottery Commission has until June 30th to approve contracts from all the applicants in the Southcentral Zone. Director of Gaming Facilities Keith Kocher says the lottery is hoping to negotiate all contracts on June 17th, though that date is still up in the area.
Once approved by the Lottery Commission, the Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board will have 60 days to choose the contract that will best benefit the county and state, Kocher said. A casino could be chosen by the end of August, he said.
“The only public meeting the lottery had last time was near the end of it...probably the first public meeting will be held in June,” said Kocher. With six proposals, the meeting may last two days, he said.
The end of the process, however, will be complete after the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission’s background and security check, which could take anywhere from 10 to 60 days to be completed, putting that date in October, Kocher said.
