A Belle Plaine man is being charged with driving under the influence following a double-fatality wreck in Haysville, Thursday.
At around 12:48 a.m., Thursday, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office worked a traffic accident at 63rd Street South and Broadway near Haysville.
A 1993 Red Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 ran the red light traveling westbound on 63rd Street from Hydraulic. As a result, the Camaro struck a tractor-trailer traveling north on Broadway. The Camaro came to rest on the east side of Broadway, approximately 100 feet north of 63rd Street South. The tractor-trailer, a farm service vehicle hauling 45,000 pounds of soybeans, came to a stop approximately a third mile north of 63rd Street South.
The Camaro caught fire after the drive, 19 year-old Colton Emerson was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, 25 year-old Beau Blake, was pinned in the burning vehicle. Both victims, who were Haysville residents, died at the scene. Toxicology reports are pending.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility for driving under the influence. Of the two passengers in the tractor-trailer, one was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with minor injuries and the other released at the scene.
Lt. Mark Pierce of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said the driver’s name could not be released at the time, pending formal charges.
