Sports can bring a community together. After Thursday night's USD 353 Board of Education meeting, district and Wellington Christian Academy students have a sporting chance take the field together.
WCA Principal Irene Myers brought the idea to the USD 353 Board of Education during this months meeting.
"The Wellington Christian Academy wants to arrive at a cooperative agreement which will allow WCA students to participate in middle school sports with USD 353," Myers told the board.
She then cited the Kansas High School Athletics Association's rule 29, section 2, article 1. b.
The rule states: In those activities where there is an absence of an effective program in one of the schools, a combined program may be established, provided a need is shown to the Executive Board. Examples which may constitute needs are: (1) insufficient numbers; (2) lack of staff; and (3) lack of facilities.
"WCA status: insufficient number of students for sports, 11 students in our sixth through eighth grade," Myers said Thursday night at the meeting. "And a lack of sports facilities." For this idea to come to fruition, the Christian academy must meet certain criteria.
"We need to be state accredited, and we are," Myers told the board. "We've been that way since 2006. And we need to be a full fledged member of KSHSAA, we're in the process of doing that."
If a cooperative agreement can be reached, WCA students would be apart of the USD 353 middle school athletics programs. Myers asked the board if they would be open to a work session after KSHSAA approves WCA.
"If we could go into the work session and come to an agreement maybe we could start with our winter and spring sports this year," Myers said.
The Board of Education is going set up a date for the work session during the Sept. 9 B.O.E. meeting.
"I think it's a good idea to be cooperative, to compete as one team..." said board member Benny Ybarra.
Myers also pointed out there were several benefits for the two entities to join forces.
"Cohesive community involvement, easier transition for WCA students into the Wellington High School," she said, "and continue to strengthen ties between USD 353 and Wellington Christian Academy."
She said students from both schools have been playing sports together for years at the recreation center and a cooperative agreement would allow them to continue those ties. The wheels are in motion, in the near future the two schools will be working out an agreement.
"I know we're all here and we all care about kids in this community," Myers mentioned. "All kids are important, each and every one of them."
