Just a few days after the Wells family learned their son needed to wear a $2,800 helmet for two months so his skull could heal correctly after a craniotomy surgical procedure, the community has pulled through.
Melody and Jerry Wells were told by the helmet manufacturer their insurance would not be filed because, the manufacturer claims that particular insurance never pays. Forced to seek help, the Wells started asking for donations. Thanks to the generosity of those that heard the story from the Wellington Daily News, Cody Wells will be able to get his helmet. An anonymous donor contacted Melody Wells while she was at work.
"She wouldn't tell me who she was or anything," Wells said. "But her and her husband donated... $1,400 for Cody's helmet." That amount was the minimum needed for the family to obtain the medical device.
"So at that point he will be able to take it home," Wells explained. "So we're still just trying to collect the remainder so we don't owe a balance on it." An account has been set up at First National Bank, 206 East Harvey Avenue in Wellington — The Cody Wells Medical Account-  there are also donation jars set up around town with Cody's picture on it.
"It's going good," Cody's mother said. "Cody's doing good, he's just a fragile little thing."
