This year's Wheat Run will be putting an emphasis on the heat.
The Wheat Run, or as you might see it typed wHEAT Run, will take place Saturday July 11. The run will be divided into two races. A 5K run will take place starting at 7:30 a.m. and a one-mile race will follow at 8:30 a.m. Both races will take place at the Hargis Creek Watershed, the same venue where Wellington High School cross country teams runs.
The race is being put together by Anders Chiropractic, which has done so since 2003. John Anders has seen a growing number of participants in the last half dozen years. He hopes numbers continue to grow.
"Last year we had about 135 in the two races combined. Each year in the last six years we've got a little more each year," said Anders.
Anders said it wouldn't be a shock to see 150 participants this year.
The run will be part of the Wheat Fest and will help the community of Wellington. "As far as who it benefits it's part of the Wheat Festival. Whatever profits from it go back to the chamber and whatever events they do," Anders.
The run has traditionally brought in faces from outside Wellington as well. Past winners of the race called Clearwater and Medicine Lodge home.
Generally, participants aren't racing others, they are competing with themselves.
"Most people are probably just competing against themselves to see what they can do. I would say the first five to ten finishers are competing against the others. Everyone else is there seeing what they can do and having a good time."
Following the race participants will be treated to refreshments.
To pre-register for the run, applications can be found at Anders Chiropractic or the offices of Kenneth Cooper CPA. The Chamber of Commerce has an entry form on it's website www.wellingtonks.org as well as a paper entry at it's office.
Cost for pre-registration is $15 dollars for one race and $18 dollars for both races. Children 12 and under will receive a $3 discount on their registrations. Pre-registered runners will be eligible to win door prizes and receive an event t-shirt. Day of registration will be an extra $5 and t-shirts will not be guaranteed.
A $25 prize will be given to the first place male and first place female in the 5K race. Trophies will be given to the first place male and female in each race. Medals will be given to the top three runners in each age group.
