The thrill of competition was highlighted by a good cause this past weekend. The first annual "Brain Games Lollapalooza" took place at Sterling House of Wellington on Jan. 14.

Several people and their teams competed in a variety of games in hopes of taking home the title of "Wellington Brainiacs - 2012." The team that took home the trophy was known as "The Clavens," and consisted of Jane Cole, Kevin Dodds, Jami Dodds, and Barbara White.

Other teams in the contest were "Thinking About It," with team members Linda Mirt, Don Bryant, Kathy Bryant, and Gillian Cubbage. Shelley Hansel-Williams, Carson LeGrand, Elise LeGrand and Keri Shimkus were on team "Beast Nation or Hompachonasus." "Michelle's Minions" was a team with Michelle McHenry, Jessica Yunker,  Amanda Fullerton, and Don Shimkus. The "Sterling House (ex-officio team)" was comprised of Steve Mitchell, Bess Supon, Jerry Headley, Francis Lanier, and Brenda Awtrey.

The teams played games such as Crossword Puzzle, Doublespeak, Line Meets Line/Cross Peg Board, Shadow Profiles/Picture Sleuth, Card Sorting, Logic Problems, Rebus (Pictorial) Puzzles, Palindromes, and more.

Proceeds raised by Brain Games Lollapalooza 2012 will go to the Alzheimer’s Association, who is the world’s leading, voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s disease care, support, and research. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and the only cause of death in the Country’s top 10 that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. In the U.S., it’s estimated that 5.4 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and someone develops the disease every minute and nine seconds.
