The Wellington Police Department is investigating criminal damage to property after alleged explosive devices were placed in mailboxes around town.
Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath said Tuesday morning officers were called to the 1300 block of N. B. to investigate a mailbox that had been damaged.
Upon further inspection, it was determined an unknown explosive device had been used to damage the mailbox. A canvas of the neighborhood was conducted and neighbors in the area reported hearing a loud boom the night before, Heath said.
Another mailbox in the 900 block of College was reported damaged as well with similar evidence found, Heath said.
The chief says he doesn’t exactly know what the devices were, but said officers collected evidence at the scene and the suspicion is fireworks are involved.
The Wellington Police Department and the Wellington Fire Department are now investigating the crimes. Anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 326-3135 or 1-800-222-TIPS, or go to www.wellington-sumnercountycrimestoppers.com. You can remain anonymous.
