The Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce has decided against a community road-trip to Topeka next Monday to watch casino presentations before the Kansas Lottery Commission. The Lottery has scheduled two days worth of presentations by developers interested in becoming gaming lottery facility managers in Kansas. All four developers interested in locating a destination-based resort casino in Sumner County will make presentations to the Commission Monday afternoon. The presentations are part of the contract negotiations between the developers and the state, which must be negotiated with Sumner County developers by the end of this month. Some community leaders, including Wellington Mayor Roger Stallbaumer and City Manager Gus Collins, and members of the board of directors for the Chamber of Commerce will attend in support of a central Sumner County location for the proposed casino. Chamber Administrative Assistant Paula Mortimer said there was more than enough support for the bus trip, with a list of 40 people who planned to attend from the Wellington area before the event was cancelled earlier this week. Mortimer said the trip was cancelled for funding reasons, and because the Chamber did not want to appear to be in competition with Mulvane on the numbers in attendance at the event. Three busses of people will reportedly attend the meetings from Mulvane — two in support of and one against casinos at Exit 33 of the Kansas Turnpike. No one who attends the meetings will be allowed to speak, and there will be no public forum in front of the Lottery Commission at this event. Sumner County Economic Development Commission Director Janis Hellard said her board also decided not to attend the meetings in Topeka, although they may teleconference the event to hear the presentations by the casino developers. The board is remaining neutral on the location issue, Hellard said, and does not want to appear to favor any site or developer over another.
