On Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m., the Wellington Lion’s Club will be host its first Groundhog Supper at the Knights of Columbus Hall to raise money for Century Park and eyeglasses for local children.
Pancakes, sausage, applesauce and drinks will be served at the supper. There is no fee for the dinners, but donations will be welcomed.
One of the highlights of the event is will be a lecture on groundhogs by Sedgwick County zookeepers. Shelley Hansel, member of the Lions Club, said she thinks it will add a fun factor to the event.
"They are going to have a whole display on groundhogs and the zoo," said Hansel. "We wanted them to bring a live groundhog ... but A, they don't have one, and B, pancakes and live animals are not a good mix."
Zoo passes will also be given away to lucky participants.
Hansel said the zoo workers will talk about groundhogs in Kansas, their behaviors and what they're really like in the wild.
"So many of us think we know what a groundhog is. I've seen the one on TV ... He always looks like he's a little stressed out or spaced out," Hansel said.
The movie Groundhogs Day will also be playing on a display at the Knights of Columbus on repeat.
Tytus Cornejo, member of the Lions Club, said the club decided to do this dinner to have this kind of event brought back to the community. "We started talking about it at a club meeting a few weeks ago,” he said. “It was done in Mayfield for a number of years. So, we kind of wanted to bring that tradition back here locally."
"We wanted to start the tradition up here in Wellington," Cornejo said. "We hope that people will see what our fundraisers have been going towards down at the park."
Hansel said inspiration to make the dinner free came from the Lion's Club motto. "We Serve."
"We don't want people to stay away because they can't afford a five dollar plate of pancakes,” she said. “We just want it to be a community event where nobody feels like they can't attend."
