Saturday will be packed with concert goers at the Wellington Lake, but Rockfest organizers are currently working on bringing the party together.
Organizer CJ Cross said the concert may see the maximum of 5,000 people this weekend, with at least 3,000 tickets having been sold so far.
“It’s going to be packed,” she said.
There will be plenty to do at the concert, whether it’s enjoying the music or checking out the vendors, boredom won’t be present, Cross said.
“A lot of our sponsors are coming out and entertaining...it’s exciting how everyone is bringing everything into place,” she said.
A sand volleyball court will be erected, representatives from the Army will hold a football toss and swimming will even be allowed during the concert.
“Bring your Frisbees out, bring your footballs out, toss them around and have a great time. This is an open field and we’ll be able to have nice weather...and a nice afternoon for people to come out and enjoy Kansas,” said Cross.
Lawn chairs are also encouraged, though no coolers, food or drinks will be allowed in.
“They will all be searched and we have to allow for a safe environment,” said Cross. Food and drink will be available at the event, she said.
Concert goers may even get the chance to see their favorite rock stars up close.
“I know the bands are just as excited as we are. They’ve been asking questions about Wellington Lake. ‘Do we get to go in the water?’ ‘Can we go fishing?’ And it’s kind of neat to hear them become a part of Wellington, Kansas for a few days,” Cross said.
Tents, fencing and the stage are being built today, transforming the Wellington Lake into the perfect concert venue.
Last minute planning and preparation has been keeping organizers ready.
“We want to make sure that this one happens. We’re over staffed and ready for everything,” Cross said, adding this concert will be the start of the success for the rest of the concerts this summer.
Tickets are still available at the Oak Tree Inn, Select-A-Seat and through midwestrockfest.com
If you wait until the last minute, tickets will also be available at the door for $35, though tickets are limited, Cross said.
“It will be a day full of fun, you don’t want to miss it,” said Cross.
Parking will be available on the south and north end of the lake, with attendants showing where to park.
Law enforcement officials, along with private security will also be at the lake, patrolling and making sure everyone stays safe during the event.
“There will be a significant amount of local presence there,” said Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath. “We just expect people to enjoy themselves but we also expect them to act responsible and should our services be called upon, we will react,”
Representatives from the Department of Wildlife and Parks will even be available, patrolling the water and keeping boaters in compliance to Kansas law. They urge those coming in with boats to have a life jacket on board for everyone on board. Children 12 years and younger must wear a life jacket at all times while on the water.
