Interesting tidbit: Since 1998, if a freshman started playing football at Conway Springs High School and played all four years he would have been part of a state championship team somewhere down the line.
That's a streak that will continue to at least 2011.
Saturday afternoon, Conway Springs secured another one.
Conway Springs 22, Silver Lake 14.
The Cardinals are state champions six times since 1998.
This one might have been the most daunting.
Silver Lake, which made the state championship game seven straight years, led for the bulk of this ball game.
But it was this unusual thing called passing that helped lead Conway Springs to the crown.
Austin Pauly, one of the many backs in Conway Springs' single wing formations, threw a 55-yard strike to Dustin Green in the second quarter to put the Cards on the board.
Then Caleb Brill would connect to the same Green midway through the fourth quarter to set up Conway Spring's second score.
And then there was a third, on an improbably two-point conversion pass after Conway Springs was backed up 25 yards with three successive penalties.
All told Conway Springs would tally two touchdowns and 127 yards offensively to pull off the victory.
The season is complete. The Cardinals, runner-ups in their district, would march to a state title knocking off the top three rated teams in Class 3A in the final Wichita Eagle poll, and four of the top five.
