The recent death of a man found in a Wellington roadway has been ruled an accident.
Roy D. Prewitt, 44, of Wellington was found lying in the roadway in the 100 block of South H Street, around 11 p.m. last Tuesday.
A passing motorist had called 911 to report seeing a bicycle as well as a person lying in the roadway, Wellington Police Chief Tracy Heath said.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Prewitt lying in the roadway. He was transported by ambulance to Sumner Regional Medical Center and then to St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita where he later died from his injuries.
A damaged, unoccupied parked pickup truck told of Prewitt’s final moments.
“It just appears he unfortunately struck that parked unoccupied pickup, striking his head on the curb,” Heath said.
An investigation into where Prewitt may have been hours before his death and retracing his steps helped detectives in their investigation.
“We’re currently investigating and trying to retrace his steps to where he was prior to this event and we’re trying to come up with anything we can at this point in time,” Heath said the day after the accident. “Right now we don’t have any evidence to suggest there was any other vehicle or anything of that nature involved but right now we really don’t know.”
The chief says foul play wasn’t a factor, though alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the death.
“We know alcohol was an alleged factor but we are waiting for results,” Heath said.
No charges will be filed in the case.
