Wellington Christian Academy (WCA) has been given the Governor’s Achievement Award for 2011.
To receive the award, a school must have achieved the Standard of Excellence in both reading and mathematics for the 2011 school year. Additionally, the school must have made adequate yearly progress in both reading and mathematics. Finally, the school must have scored in the top 5% in both reading and mathematics on the 2011 state assessments for each individual grade level.
“It’s a very hard test,” said WCA Principal, Irene Myers.
The standardized assessments are different for each grade. According to Myers, each test is centered on learning goals set up by the state. This past year, along with basic reading and vocabulary, subjects such as geometry and algebra made up large parts of the tests.
Myers said the teachers on her staff prepared the students with daily reviews of past material and administered practice exams to give the students an idea of what the actual test would be like.
“We also make sure all of the kids know how important it is to do well,” said Myers.
To earn the Governor’s Achievement award is no small feat. Of the 860 elementary schools in the state, only 43 of them were given the Governor’s award.
While the state hasn’t widely announced which schools earned the award, WCA received a letter and a plaque on January 11 informing them of their standing. Myers said the students and staff celebrated by holding a low-key ice cream party.
This isn’t the first time Wellington Christian Academy has earned the Governor’s Achievement Award. The school was also recognized for the 2006-07, 2008-09, and 2009-10 school years.
“We’re proud of this award, and it takes all of the students and teachers to get it,” said Myers.
