A preliminary hearing date has been set in the case against a Geuda Springs man involved in an alleged drunk driving incident that killed a Wellington teen.
Brayden Popplewell, 19, of Wellington, was killed after a 2007 Dodge pickup truck driven by Patrick Burr of Geuda Springs failed to yield at a stop sign near 40th and Oliver.
Burr was traveling westbound on 40th Street South when he failed to yield to another driver, going southbound on Oliver Road.
The other vehicle, a 2000 Mercury four-door passenger car driven by Jessica Sanborn, slammed into the pickup, unable to stop in time, Sumner County deputies said.
Burr and Sanborn sustained minor injuries, along with three other passengers, while pickup passenger Miranda Serrioz was flown by Eagle Med to a Wichita hospital with life-threatening injuries. Popplewell died at the scene and was taken to Sumner Regional Medical Center, deputies reported.
Burr is currently charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, failure to yield at a stop or yield sign, transporting an open container and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Burr made an appearance before Judge William Mott, Thursday morning, with his defense attorney Rod Iverson beside him.
Mott scheduled a preliminary hearing for 1:30 p.m., Dec. 10 at the Sumner County Courthouse.
Iverson said though defense counsel is still waiting to get evidence back, it should give them enough time to prepare their case.
Burr is currently being held at the Sumner County Jail on $50,000 bond.
